This is our offering of AC/DC power supplies. We currently offer three Class 1 Division 2 certified units and a compact (just 22.5mm wide) power supply rated 24Vdc @ 1.25A.

180W Power Supply

The DC Plus® 30W Power Supply was designed specifically to reduce the amount of panel space required to install an AC/DC power supply. The input is 120/230Vac and the output is rated 24Vdc @ 1.25A. The high efficiency regulation circuit minimizes power dissipation and allows for the compact package. DePro®

DePro® modules are certified for use in Class 1 Division 2 hazardous locations and many are also Zone 2 certified. Included in this product family is an 8 channel optocoupler, 5x20mm fuse modules, electromechanical and solid state relay modules and fuse monitoring modules.

FOVP

Emphatec - FOVP Cat.#330111

The DePro® -FOVP module provides overcurrent protection and overvoltage protection for 24Vdc control loops. Most commonly used with digital input and output circuits the module is designed for use in Class 1 Division 2 applications.

A fuse limits the current to the field while an electronic circuit monitors the voltage and blows the fuse if an overvoltage condition occurs. The fuse is a standard 5x20mm glass type fuse and is socket mounted under a protective cover. The maximum fuse rating is 2A. Standard 5x20mm fuses are suitable for non-overload C1D2 applications - see application note at www.emphatec.com.

An LED is included to indicate the module is powered and the fuse is healthy. The overvoltage protection is intended to provide protection against arcing and also damage to field devices in the event of a failure in the 24V power supply. If the power supply output voltage exceeds 32Vdc the fuse on the DePro® -FOVP module will blow.

FMS 24Vdc

These modules are intended for any application requiring supplemental fusing. Fuse status indication is included (LED on = fuse healthy). The 24Vdc versions are ideal accessories to the DC Plus® power supplies while the AC versions are intended for control applications where upstream branch protection or control transformers are used.

The 24Vdc version is just 11.2mm wide while the 120Vac/dc version is 16.2mm wide. These widths are comparable to a fuse terminal plus a feedthrough terminal for the 0V connection. The fuse is socket mounted beneath a protective cover. Standard 5x20mm fuses are used and are NOT provided with the module. Glass fuses are recommended as the status LED is under the fuse. Standard 5x20mm fuses are suitable for non-overload C1D2 applications.

FSMM/24V/SA

Emphatec - FSMM/24V/SA Cat.#330193

This module is the perfect power supply accessory. Solid state switches, in this case a MOSFET, offer faster switching times and longer operating life than mechanical relays. The on-board fuse eliminates the need for an additional fuse terminal, saving panel space and cost. The fuse is a TR5 micro style.

These are available with ratings up to 5A continuous and a 50A interrupting capacity. Each module comes with a 5A, slow blow fuse installed. Socket mounting makes replacement quick and easy. When properly sized the occurrence of a fault causes the fuse to fail before the 24Vdc power supply shuts off (the user may need to select a fuse with a lower rating). The micro style fuse keeps the module size as small as possible. The fuse cover, developed by Emphatec, secures the fuse in the socket and allows the module to meet the requirements for Class 1 Division 2 and Zone 2 certification.

A status LED provides indication of both the input and output status. The LED illuminates if the input is energized, the fuse is healthy and the output MOSFET is conducting a current. If the fuse is blown or the load is disconnected the LED will not illuminate. If the MOSFET is in a short circuit condition the LED will illuminate when the input is not energized.

FMM/8/24V

Emphatec - FMM/8/24V Cat.#330198

This module provides fusing and power distribution in one module. The input is bussed to 8 fuses and each output provides + and - terminals. The fuses are the micro style (Littelfuse / Wickmann TR5 or equivalent) rated 2A max. The total current rating for all 8 channels is 10A. The 35mm DIn rail mounted package is designed to require minimal space between wire ducts. Fuses are socket mounted beneath protective covers.

Emphatec offers the module with 0.5A, 1.0A or 2.0A fuses installed. Each fuse has an associated status LED that provides fuse healthy indication. The DePro® -FMM/8/24V is designed for 24Vdc applications only.

FRMS/24V/SA

Emphatec - FRMS/24V/SA Cat.#330199

The DEPRO - FRM5/24V/5A combines a relay module and a fuse terminal to make a compact module that saves panel space and installation time.

The output is a 1 form C (SPDT) contact with a fuse in series with the common connection. The contact is rated 5A max. at 30Vdc/230Vac. To increase vibration resistance the relay is soldered to the PCB. A green LED illuminates when the coil is energized.

Provision is made for a standard 5x20mm fuse (not included). These are suitable for non-overload C1D2 applications.

The socket mounted fuse is accessed by removing a single screw that holds the protective cover in place. A test point is provided to allow easy checking of the fuse condition - a voltage at this test point indicates a healthy fuse.

Fuse Monitor 24Vdc

Monitors up to 8 fuses or circuit breakers and provides an alarm if one or more fails, compact, requires just 27mm of DIN rail. Traditionally LED indicators in fuse terminals are used to indicate a blown fuse. This works fine when you have the doors of the control cabinet open and may be all that is required. However, if you want a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker to provide a signal to the control room, or a display on the outside of the cabinet, then these modules are the perfect solution. They monitor up to 8 devices and provide a 1 form C (SPDT) relay contact to indicate a failure. The modules operate as a logic AND device. If all 8 inputs are energized the output relay is energized. If one or more input is lost the relay switches off. If the application calls for less than 8 inputs then the unused channels are simply bypassed by using a DIP switch – no need to jumper the unused channels.

Two versions are available – one for 24Vdc applications and one for 120Vac applications. The modules are powered from the same voltage as they are monitoring meaning no auxiliary supplies are needed. All connections are via plug and socket connections for easy installation. The compact package requires just 27mm of DIN rail and can be mounted on 15mm, 32mm or 35mm rails.

8 Channel Optocoupler

8 isolated optocouplers in a 22.5mm wide housing, wide range input: 10-150Vdc, 70-120Vac. In applications where panel space is limited this module is the ideal solution. In 22.5mm of DIN rail space the DePro® 8 Channel Optocoupler provides 8 isolated optocouplers with wide range and constant current inputs - that’s just 2.8mm per opto!

The input of each channel accepts signals from 10-150Vdc or 70-120Vac meaning one module is suitable for use with 12, 24, 28, 48 and 125Vdc, as well as 120Vac. The input current is constant at approximately 4mA regardless of the input voltage. The DePro® 8 Channel Optocoupler is the perfect interface between various field signals and PLC or DCS digital inputs.

Each channel has a status LED to indicate the ouput is energized. If there is no power applied to the outputs the LED will not energize. The coils are configured as common negative meaning they are compatible with PLC or DCS ouptuts that source 24Vdc. Each output is rated 24Vdc nominal at 40mA maximum. Using external jumper combs the positive or negative of each contact output can easily be jumpered. This is convenient when all 8 optos are switching power from a common source.

FMS/8 8 Channel Fuse Module

The DEPRO® - FM5/8 modules provide power distribution and fusing in oneconvenient package. The modules include sockets for eight 5x20mm fuses under protective covers and LEDs to show the status of each fuse. Because the modules distribute both line and neutral (or 24V and 0V) the LED is on when the fuse is healthy and there is no leakage current if a fuse blows.

Fuses up to 4A can be installed (fuses are not provided with the modules) butthe total current drawn from all eight channels cannot exceed 30A. Terminals are clearly marked and the module mounts on 32mm and 35mm DIN rails.

These modules reduce installation time as there is no need to installjumpers or cross connections for power distribution. They are also quicker to install than the equivalent fuse terminals and feedthrough terminal blocks.

FMC Midget Fuse Modules

Class 1 Division 2 certified midget fuse holders are very rare so Emphatec is very pleased to offer the new DEPRO® - FMC modules. These include a single phase and a three phase module. Both have been certified for use in Class 1 Division 2 and Zone 2 hazardous locations.

The single phase version has terminations for both line and neutral so this module is the equivalent of a midget fuse terminal block and a feedthrough terminal block. The status LED is between the line and neutral on the output so it provides fuse healthy indication meaning no leakage current if the fuse blows.

The three phase version has terminations for the 3 phases on the input and output sides (there is no neutral termination). This module does not include status LEDs.

Both modules provide touch safe covers over the midget fuses. Each cover is secured in place via a screw. Both modules have been tested with 10kA fault currents.

HCRM High Current Relay Module

The DEPRO® - HCRM is designed to interface a PLC/DCS digital output toa high current load device. The coil is rated 24Vdc and the 1 form C contact is rated up to 12Vdc or 240Vac at 15A.

This relay has been approved for use in Class 1 Division 2 / Zone 2 hazardouslocations.

QTD Quarter Turn Disconnect Module

The DEPRO® - QTD modules are perfect examples of what we call EmphaticallyUnique products! These modules are designed for use in low current (up to 1A) applications and provide an easy means of temporarily disconnecting a signal. The disconnect is operated using a screwdriver and can be secured in the open position. Best of all they can be operated under load.

There are other quarter turn disconnect products available but be careful – readthe literature closely and you might find they cannot be operated under load. This means before you can use them as a disconnect you must first disconnect the power to them! The DEPRO® - QTD modules use a sealed switch that has been tested for use in hazardous locations. This allows the QTD modules to be operated under load even in Class 1 Division 2 and Zone 2 hazardous locations.

Four versions are currently available; the basic QTD/1A, the QTD/28V/1A andQTD/120V/1A with an LED to indicate the contact is closed, and the QTD/ ST with digital outputs to indicate the position of the contact.

FMT T-Class Fuse Module

Emphatec is very pleased to offer the new DEPRO® - FMT module – possiblythe first DIN rail mounted fuse holder for T-Class fuses. This module has been certified for use in Class 1 Division 2 and Zone 2 hazardous locations.

T-Class fuses offer high interrupting current ratings but are physically smallerthan midget fuses. The DEPRO® - FMT requires 30mm of DIN rail while the DEPRO® - FMC midget fuse module requires 45mm of DIN rail.

The DEPRO® - FMT has terminations for both line and neutral so this module isthe equivalent of a fuse terminal block and a feedthrough terminal block. The status LED is between the line and neutral on the output so it provides fuse healthy indication meaning no leakage current if the fuse blows.

A touch safe cover over the fuse makes the module touch safe and the coveris secured in place via a screw. The module has been tested with 10kA fault currents.

ADM Active Diode Module

Emphatec’s Active Diode Modules provide the function of a diode but donot actually contain a diode. Instead a MOSFET is configured to behave like a diode but with a significantly lower forward voltage drop. This means less power dissipation and a more efficient design.

Diodes are often connected to the output of a power supply to isolate thesupply in the event of an internal failure. This is particularly common when multiple power supplies are connected in parallel for redundancy or increased capacity. If a component in one power supply fails in a short circuit condition it must be isolated so that it does not short the output of any of power supplies connected in parallel. A diode does this by preventing current to flow to the input of the failed power supply. Typical diodes introduce a voltage drop of approximately 0.7V or 0.3V in the case of Schottky diodes. This means between 0.3W and 0.7W per amp of load current applied to the power supply. This can contribute greatly to the ambient temperature within a control cabinet.

The Active Diode Modules replace the diode with a MOSFET and lower thevoltage drop to 50mV maximum. This means 1.25W of power dissipation at 25A versus 7.5-17.5W when traditional diodes are used. The result is a cooler control cabinet and a higher ambient operating temperature for the Active Diode Modules.

Two versions are available – the SIGNEXT® version is cULus approvedfor use in standard applications while the DEPRO® version is cCSAus approved for use in Class 1 Division 2 / Zone 2 hazardous locations.

GFCI Outlet

Mounts on 35mm DIN rail, direct mounted if foot is removed, cULus approved GFCI outlet rated 15A. This module allows a ground fault protected outlet to be added to a control cabinet quickly and easily. Instead of terminals for the incoming power the module includes 1m wires. (12 AWG, CSA certified and UL approved). These are cut to length by the user and connected to the supply terminals.

The GFCI outlet meets the latest requirements of the NEC. The DIN rail mounting foot can be removed so the module can be direct mounted using 4 mounting tabs. The enclosure is plastic and CSA/UL approved.

AC Outlet Module

Compact, AC outlet module for installation in control cabinets, comes with built-in supplemental circuit breaker, mounts on both 32 and 35mm DIN rail. The VanGuard® AC Outlet Module provides a quick and easy way to install a maintenance outlet in a control panel. Clip it on a DIN rail and connect 120Vac and you're done.

Included on the module is a 5A supplemental circuit breaker with status LED. As the breaker is a supplemental rated device, NEC/CEC requirements with regards to interrupting ratings and upstream protection by a branch breaker or fuse must be adhered to. See datasheet for "Application Note".

The module requires just 35mm of DIN rail. Also available is a GFCI version.

Duplex outlet requires just 42mm of DIN rail, includes power status LED, latching mounting foot makes installation and removal from DIN rail easy, CSA certified and UL recognized. The VanGuard® AC Outlet makes adding a 120V maintenance outlet to control cabinets quick and easy. It mounts on standard 35mm DIN rail and requires just 42mm of rail space.

An LED indicates that 120V is applied to the module. The terminations accept slotted or Phillips screwdrivers. The mounting foot includes a latching lock - slide it open, mount the module on the DIN rail and slide the lock closed.

The VanGuard® AC Outlet is CSA certified and UL recognized.

MFM Main Fuse Module with Ammeter

Do you use midget fuse terminals in your control cabinet? Want anindication of how much current is being drawn? The VANGUARD® - MFM does both!

The module accepts a standard midget fuse which is socket mounted under aprotective cover secured in place by a screw. This makes it fully touch safe. Fuses rated up to 25A can be used.

A current transformer in series with the fuse drives an analog meter thatdisplays the load current. An external power supply is not required.

Other features include mounting on 32mm and 35mm DIN rails as well asdual input terminals to make daisychaining multiple modules easier. The VANGUARD® - MFM is an inexpensive and easy way to add branch fuse protection and an ammeter to a control cabinet.

ACFT Fused AAC Outlet Module

The latest addition to Emphatec’s line of AC outlet modules is the ACFTversion with on-board branch fuse. The fuse, a T-class type, provides a 10KA interrupting current rating. An LED provides indication that the fuse is healthy and the power is applied to the module.

The VANGUARD® AC outlet modules allow quick and easy installation ofmaintenance outlets in control cabinets and machinery. We currently offer a duplex outlet, a single outlet with a supplemental circuit breaker and a GFCI version. Other versions are in development.

The SigNext® 8 Channel Circuit Breaker module provides 8 remotely controllable DC circuit breakers in a 35mm wide DIN rail mounted housing. That means less than 4mm per breaker!

The breaker mechanism is a supplemental rated thermal device that remains off once it has tripped (most thermal breakers reset automatically and cycle on and off if the fault is still present). Resetting a tripped breaker is accomplished via a pushbutton on the module or via a digital input. The reset is common to all 8 breakers. LEDs indicate the status of each channel. All restrictions associated with supplemental breakers apply to this module.

The remote on/off feature allows this module to be used as an 8 pole relay with the relays fed from a common 24Vdc source. Intended as a power supply accessory, the thermal breakers are fast enough that a fault in one circuit will trip the breaker before the power supply switches off. The interrupting rating is 500A so the short circuit fault current delivered by the 24Vdc supply cannot exceed this level.

This SigNext® signal conditioner can be configured by the user for a total of 42 different input/output signal combinations. Of course standard ranges of 0-10Vdc and 4-20mA are included but there are also less common ranges such as 0-50mV or 0-1mA inputs. This one module should meet most, if not all, your analog signal isolation and conversion needs.

Three port isolation is provided to ensure no ground loops are created. DIP switch settings can be changed while the module is powered. Span and zero calibration potentiometers are accessible on the front of the module.

CRM Compact Relay Module

The CRM relay module was designed as an interposing relay for use betweenPLC / DCS digital outputs and field devices. It is a general purpose relay with cULus approval.

The relay is socket mounted. The terminations used are of the “push-in”type which allows solid wires or wires with ferrules to be inserted directly without the need to open a clamp or torque a screw. Removing the wire is as simple as pressing a button and pulling the wire out. The style of termination is very compact and reduces installation time. When used with stranded wires the clamp is first opened by pressing the button and then the wire is inserted and the button released. These are not insulation displacement terminations – the wire still have to be stripped.

There are two input (coil) terminals for the 24Vdc connection and for the 0Vconnection. This makes it easy to “daisy chain” either connection without having to put 2 wires in one terminal.

The CRM relay is only 7mm wide on the DIN rail. Unlike 6mm wide relaymodules the terminations on the CRM are side-by-side instead of one over top of the other so wiring is neater and troubleshooting is easier. Mounting is on 32mm or 35mm DIN rails.

CT Shorting Module

This unique module monitors the secondary of a current transformer and instantly applies a short circuit if a voltage, indicating an open circuited secondary, is detected. If open circuit the secondary of a CT can produce very high voltages that can pose a significant safety hazard - shock hazards to personnel and the potential to cause the CT to catch fire. The SigNext® CT Shorting Module can apply a short circuit to the CT when a voltage as low as approximately 2V is detected, well before it becomes hazardous. Once the short circuit is applied an alarm output is energized and the short circuit can be applied indefinitely without any concerns about overheating.

CBM Circuit Breaker Module

The SIGNEXT® - CBM family of circuit breaker modules include single and eight channel versions. The eight channel units have a single input so the module provides power distribution as well. Modules are available for 24Vdc and 120-230Vac applications and the current ratings range from 0.5A to 5A.

The circuit breaker is a supplementaldevice with manual reset. They cannot be tripped manually. Each channel has a status LED – in the case of the single channel versions the LED providestripped breaker indication (on when the breaker is open) while the LEDs provide breaker set indication (on when the breaker is closed) on the eight channel units. The reason for this configuration of the single channel units is to make it interchangeable with fuse terminal blocks.

The interrupting current rating of the breaker is 200A at 24Vdc or 1000A at120-230Vac. In AC applications the modules should be fed from a branch breaker or fuse or from a control transformer that cannot deliver more than 1000A of short circuit current.

FRM Fused Relay Module

All the InstaLink® modules were designed to provide users with practical features and easy installation using a simple jumpering system. They are not “state-of-the-art”, “earth shattering” or likely to put our competitors out of business. But they are easy to use and often combine in one module the features competitors can only offer through multiple products.

The InstaLink®-FRM combines a 1 form C interposing relay module with a fuse terminal. The fuse can be rated up to 5A (not included with module) and is the industry standard 5x20mm size. The fuse status is indicated by a green LED. Unlike fuse blown indication that produces a small leakage current the LED circuit on the FRM uses an external “N/-“ connection. This is either the neutral in an AC circuit or the 0V side of a 24Vdc supply. This eliminates any leakage currents as the LED turns off if fuse blows.

The input is rated 24Vac/dc and a second green LED indicates the coil is energized.

A jumpering system is provided for the common of the relay contact, the N/- of the output circuit (used for the LED status indicator) and one side of the input. For the input either the + or – can be commoned allowing the input to be switched positive or switched negative. The jumpers use 0.187” push-on terminals. Jumpers are provided with the module.

DC Solid State Relay & Current Limiter

We’re not sure if this is a DC solid state relay with an overcurrent protection feature or an electronic DC circuit breaker with a relay function. Either way, it can control 24Vdc loads rated up to 20A, senses the load current and turns off if the current exceeds a user configurable trip point.

Using a 24Vdc control signal the load current can be turned on and off. The user can set a load current threshold (or trip point) above which the module turns off. Resetting the module after an overcurrent condition can be accomplished 3 ways:

  • pulsing the RST terminal with 24Vdc
  • pressing the on-board reset pushbutton
  • cycling the 24Vdc supply

The trip point is adjusted using a multi-turn potentiometer. How does the user know what trip current level they have set it for? There are 2 methods: The first is to connect a voltmeter between 2 test points (mini-banana plug jacks) and calculating the trip point using the equation "Vtest = Itrip x 0.185". A more accurate method involving applying a known load current and adjusting the trip point to an actual measured value is also possible (see “Adjustment” section on reverse).

Other features include a trip alarm output, status LED and a cross connection method that allows 24Vdc to be bussed to multiple modules. The module mounts on both 32mm and 35mm DIN rails and requires only 40mm of rail space.

GLF Ground Loop Filter

It acts like a current loop isolator up to a point but doesn’t use a transformer or optocoupler for isolation! Maybe we could call it a “non-galvanic isolator” but we can’t think of any other type of isolation other than galvanic. Since it tolerates ground differential voltages up to 120V we even considered naming it “The Tolerator” but to avoid controversy we opted for “Ground Loop Filter” or “GLF” for short. This module interfaces a field transmitter producing 4-20mA to a PLC or DCS input. Where analog isolators can provide optical or transformer isolation up to 2KV or higher the InstaLink®-GLF provides a very high impedance between the input and output loops but does not actually isolate the signals.

This acts as a barrier for currents caused by ground differentials. The barrier is rated 120V - above 140V it can break down and a ground loop current would be produced. 120 volts represents a sizeable ground differential voltage and much lower values are typical.

A unique feature of the InstaLink®-GLF is the make-before-break connector that allows a meter to be inserted into the input loop and removed without causing a momentary interruption of the loop. This makes calibration very easy. A test cable is available. Other features include very fast response time and plug-in jumpers for easy distribution of 24Vdc (included with each module). Best of all, the low price allows you to install one in each of your current loops as insurance against errors caused by ground loops. If you are only concerned with ground loops the InstaLink®-GLF is the solution. If you are also trying to prevent overvoltage transients from reaching your PLC or DCS then the InstaLink®-CLI isolator might be a better solution.

CLI 4-20mA Loop Isolator

This module interfaces a field transmitter producing 4-20mA to a PLC or DCS input. Power to the field transmitter is provided by an external power supply. The InstaLink®-CLI provides up to 2.5KV of input-output isolation and also features overvoltage transient protection on the input. Unique features of the InstaLink®-CLI include the make-before-break connector and adjustable response time.

The make-before-break connector allows a meter to be inserted into the input loop and removed without causing a momentary interruption of the loop. This makes calibration very easy. A test cable is available. Adjustable response time allows the user to select one of four response times – 1ms, 35ms, 350ms or 400ms. In applications where fast response is required there are few isolators faster than the InstaLink®-CLI. If speed is not critical then the response time can be increased to allow the module to provide some filtering of the incoming signal. The response time can be adjusted quickly and easily via DIP switches.

Another key feature is the plug-in jumpering system for easy distribution of 24Vdc for the module’s output loop (sourcing configuration) and the input (transmitter) cable shield. Jumpers included with each module.

If you are only concerned with ground loops consider Emphatec’s InstaLink-GLF as a possible lower cost solution. If you want economical optical isolation to eliminate ground loops and also to prevent overvoltage transients from reaching your PLC or DCS then the InstaLink®-CLI isolator is the solution.

SRM Sequencing Relay Module

In the case of DC power supplies, some loads may actually switch on and draw current when the power supply voltage is at a fraction of the normal output. For example, when a power supply is switched on the voltage ramps up to 24Vdc but an analog signal conditioner may start drawing current when the voltage is 10Vdc or less. If the signal conditioner has an internal DC/DC converter (many do) the current draw at 10Vdc is substantially higher than at 24Vdc. If there are too many loads like this it can cause the power supply to go into an over-current condition and shut off or the voltage will never increase to 24Vdc. The InstaLink®-SRM has a 0.5 sec. delay after the input is energized before the relay coil is energized and an output signal to energize the next relay is activated.

The next relay adds another 0.5 sec. delay and so on. As many relays as necessary can be linked together. The first InstaLink®-SRM is configured via a jumper as the master and all others are configured as slaves. Interconnection of multiple modules is accomplished by connecting the "OUT" terminal of one module to the "SIG" of the next. The contact is fused and rated for 24Vdc @ 5A max. An LED indicates the fuse status (green;on=fuse healthy). Provision has been made for cross connecting the 24Vdc and 0V used to power the contacts. Jumpers are provided with each module. A second LED indicates the status of the relay (green;on=energized).

PLI Passive Loop Interface

The InstaLink®-PLI combines the features of three terminal blocks used to interface a current loop to a PLC or DCS - two feedthrough terminals and a ground terminal for the shield. But it also includes a make-before-break connector as well as HART® protocol test points. The module is passive and requires no power.

Like many of the InstaLink® modules the PLI module includes a make-before-break connector that allows a meter to be inserted into the input loop and removed without causing a momentary interruption of the loop.

A test cable is available. A jumpering system is provided for the shield in the transmitter cable and the 24Vdc supply. The jumpers use 0.187” push-on terminals. Jumpers are provided with the module. The Instalink®-PLI is one of four InstaLink® modules designed for 4-20mA loop applications and is the most basic. The others are the CLM current limiter, the GLF ground loop filter and the CLI loop isolator.

CLM 4-20mA Loop

The InstaLink®-CLM serves a number of functions - it is the equivalent of a fuse terminal, a feedthrough terminal and a ground terminal. But unlike a fuse it automatically resets after a fault. It also includes a make-before-break function for easy insertion of a current meter into the loop.

The modules's current limiting circuit prevents a short circuit in one current loop from causing a power supply from shutting down. Only the short circuited loop is affected - the rest of the system continues to operate.

The module provides a digital output signal that can be monitored by a PLC or DCS and used to indicate exactly which loop is shorted.

This module is an economical means of detecting a current in an AC circuit. The load wire is passed through the on-board current transformer and if the load current exceeds the threshold a relay is energized. The InstaLink®-CMM module was designed with process automation in mind. In applications with critical control loops the CMM module provides a continuous indication that the loop integrity is intact regardless of the status of the field device or the PLC/DCS digital output.

The user configures the module for use with either digital inputs or digital outputs. Configuration is via a jumper on the module. A small leakage current is introduced into the loop and is monitored to verify continuity in the loop. Two status LED’s are included, one to indicate 24Vdc is present (the power supply is on and the fuse is good) and the other to indicate continuity (LED on means continuity in loop). The module’s digital output is active when the loop continuity is intact.

Like most other InstaLink® modules provision is made to jumper the 24Vdc power to adjacent modules. Jumpers are included with each module.

Emphatec has partnered with Unibloc to offer a small selection of terminal blocks. These are intended as accessories to Emphatec’s DC power supplies but are also suited for general purpose use as well as Class 1 Division 2 applications. The BC2.5/4 is a 5mm wide feedthrough terminal while the BC4S is a 6mm wide lever disconnect terminal. The BC5F is a 5x20mm fuse holder* and is 8mm wide.

All three terminals accept Weidmuller’s Multicard marking tags. Accessories such as partitions and jumper combs are available. The combifoot design allows a single terminal to be used on any of the commonly available DIN rails – 15mm, 32mm, 35x7.5mm and 35x15mm.

For Class 1 Division 2 applications the terminals have been tested for temperature rise and pull-out. The pull-out tests are not only for the wire terminations but are also performed on the fuse lever. The lever must withstand a force of 15N to ensure it cannot be accidentally operated while under load and cause an arc. Generally only screw-in style fuse terminals would meet this requirement but the BC5F passes easily.
